Abstract

This study aims to explore the construction of trust in digital communication among Generation Z, specifically how they assess credibility, authenticity, security, and risk in interactions via social media and instant messaging apps. This study employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive phenomenological design, as it focuses on participants’ subjective experiences in interpreting digital trust. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participatory digital observation, and documentation of 12–18 Generation Z participants who actively use at least two digital platforms. Data analysis was conducted thematically through a process of data condensation, coding, categorization, and the extraction of main themes. The research findings indicate that digital trust is constructed through several key themes: the interpretation of digital identity, assessments of authenticity, social validation through social networks, verification strategies, repeated interaction experiences, and privacy management. These findings suggest that Generation Z does not passively receive digital communication but actively interprets digital cues before deciding to trust or maintain distance. This study contributes to the development of digital communication research by positioning trust as a dynamic and contextual social construction. Consequently, digital literacy should be directed not only toward technical skills but also toward the ability to evaluate credibility, protect privacy, and build ethical online communication. Further research is recommended to examine the construction of digital trust on more specific platforms, regions, or social relationships.
